It was the first major victory for federal authorities against US tech giant Google, with a US court judge ruling on Monday that Google violated antitrust laws by spending billions of dollars to obtain illegal royalties on internet search activity and become the world's default search engine.

The District Court ruling in Washington paves the way for another trial to determine possible reforms, possibly including the dissolution of Google's parent company Alphabet. If that happens, the world of online advertising, which has been dominated by Google for years, will change radically. Washington District Court Judge Amit Mehta said in the ruling that Google is a monopolist and has acted to maintain a monopoly. Google controls 90 percent of the online and 95 percent of the smartphone search market. Alphabet shares fell 4.5 percent on Monday after the court's decision. Notably, Google advertising is projected to account for 77 percent of Alphabet's total sales in 2023. Alphabet said it is considering appealing the district court's decision.

Judge Amit Mehta was born in Patan

Incidentally, Judge Amit Mehta, who ruled against Google headed by Indian native Sundar Pichai, is a Gujarati. He was born in Patan. Google CEO Pichai was born in Madurai. In 2022, it was Amit Mehta who rejected Trump's claim for a full pardon in the cases of attack on the US Parliament and earlier this year he sentenced Trump's former advisor Peter Navarro to four months in jail for contempt of Parliament.
