Bangkok, 24 August (HS). Two independent journalists were killed during an army raid in Myanmar. This information has come from the media and colleagues of the slain journalists. One journalist was killed while being held hostage after security forces raided his house in the southern state of Mon.
The slain journalists have been identified as Win Htoot (26) and Htet Myat Tu (28), who worked independently for the Democratic Voice of Burma (DVB). This is the latest case of killing of journalists by security forces of the military, which seized power in February 2021 after overthrowing the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi.
At least five other media workers have been killed and many others have been detained and tortured, according to media workers familiar with the killings and arrests of journalists. Khin Yupar, head of DVB's Citizen Journalist Network programme, said on Friday that security forces raided Htet Myat Tu's house in Letpya village in Mon state's Kyaakhto region at 9am on Wednesday when his friends from the Kyaakhto Revolution Force were visiting him. The Kyaakhto Revolution Force is one of several local armed resistance forces formed to oppose military rule. He said Win Htoot, who had been living in the house since July, and a member of the resistance group were shot dead during the raid, and another guerrilla and Htet Myat Tu were killed after being arrested by soldiers.
