Virudhunagar: Firecracker industry becoming a hotbed of accidents

Virudhunagar district of Tamil Nadu is a major center of firecracker industry, but this area repeatedly witnesses such dangerous accidents.

Past accidents that caused devastation

  1. May 2024: Nine workers, including five women, were killed in the explosion at a firecracker manufacturing unit at Sengamalapatti near Sivakasi.
  2. February 2024: 10 people died and several were injured in an explosion in another factory in Virudhunagar district.
  3. October 2023: 14 people lost their lives in a fire that broke out in firecracker factories in Rangappalayam and Kitchenaikenpatti villages.

These accidents have not only taken the lives of workers, but have also raised serious questions on the safety arrangements of the factories in this area.

Lack of safety measures in firecracker factories

Workers on a large scale in the firecracker industry often work with minimal safety measures. Despite working with explosive materials, proper training, protective equipment and standards are not followed.

main problems

  • Carelessness in storage and mixing of chemicals.
  • Non-availability of safety equipment to workers.
  • Lack of government oversight.

The government and industry owners should take concrete steps in this direction so that such incidents can be prevented in future.
