New Delhi: The central government has accepted the threat posed to digital platforms by big tech companies Google and Meta.Speaking on the occasion of National Press Day, Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently called for greater accountability and fairness from big tech companies. He also said that there are four important challenges facing the news media such as fake news, algorithmic bias, artificial intelligence and fair compensation.
He reiterated the issue raised by India’s digital news media sector over the past few years regarding the monopoly of big tech companies, especially the threat posed by giants like Google and Meta, and suggested that there be regulations to protect the interests. There is an urgent need to support the digital news industry and help it survive.
The media industry says these companies benefit from the content produced by Indian news agencies. But, they are not getting proper compensation for their hard work. This has put a question mark on the existence of digital news media in India.
Now, they are role models of these companies who set their own rules regardless of the problems facing the industry. Thus there is a lack of transparency and no room for negotiation or revenue sharing. Thus essentially the Indian media industry has not expressed its opinion.
Many countries have stepped up investigations into antitrust practices adopted by Big Tech. Australia, Europe, Britain, Canada and the US are leading the fight. To ensure fair competition in India, the governments there are considering strict rules and frameworks against these giant companies, Competition Commission of India (CCI) has started investigating the policies of these companies. However, more information is yet to be received on this.
