With the increase in digital transactions in the country, cases of fraud are also increasing. Almost every day a large number of people are receiving such phone calls, emails or messages which are actually sent by fraudsters. These criminals find a new way every day through which they can extort money from you. Now a new way is the use of overpayment. An attempt has been made to extort money from many people through the UPI overpayment scam. The relief is that you can do this with a little patience and vigilance.
Know what this scam is
You get a call from a person who tells you about a major emergency and requests you to return the money he sent by mistake under the stress. At first glance, you may think that it is a normal occurrence that a person in trouble has sent you money by mistake and you are ready to pay the money. But if you are short-tempered or careless or are under emotional pressure against the person, you will later find out that you have been robbed.
Actually these people transfer you an amount like Rs. 100, Rs. 200 or Rs. 500. But on the phone you are being asked to transfer 100 times more than this amount and the money is being demanded back. 100 times the amount is demanded because in banking transactions two zeros are also given after the decimal point. That is, Rs. 100 is given for Rs. 100.00 and Rs. 200 is given for Rs. 200.00. The criminal puts so much emotional pressure on you that you are unable to think anything or even see the message and you read ten thousand for Rs. 100.00 or twenty bazaars for Rs. 200.00. Believe me many people have been hurt by this trick.
How to Avoid This Scam
It is not difficult to avoid this scam or any such scam. Remember not to take any step just on someone's advice. Keep the phone and open your UPI to see the transaction. It is possible that during this time also you are getting continuous calls from that number. But first find out yourself. If you have not received any such amount then ignore the call. If this has really happened, someone has sent you money by mistake, then being a responsible citizen, return the money that came to you by mistake. The thing to be kept in mind here is that if you return the money to a stranger in such a case, then keep all the information with him about which number you got the call from and when. What was the name of that person and when did you return the money?
In no case can it be determined how much emotional pressure the other party is putting on you without sending any money.
Remember not to panic or react emotionally to any unknown calls or messages. Do your homework first and if you feel stressed or pressured by such calls or have lost money, talk to someone you trust and contact the nearest police station.
