There was a ruckus due to the mass murder of the British Collector and Joint Magistrate

Hamirpur, June 13 (HS). 167 years ago, the fire of rebellion against the British erupted in Hamirpur district of Uttar Pradesh. On the same day, the armed government guards posted in the treasury revolted. The freedom fighters here shot the British collector TK Lloyd and joint magistrate Donald in the court in public. The British soldiers, enraged by this sensational incident, destroyed the Surouli Buzurg village. Today we are mentioning that history of Hamirpur which no one would have known before.

On 23 June 1757, in the Battle of Plassey, the British Company's soldiers defeated Siraj-ud-Daulah, the Nawab of Bengal, due to the treachery of Mirjapur, and thus laid the foundation of British rule in India. 100 years after the establishment of British rule, in 1857, the spark of rebellion against British rule took the form of a flame across India. When the fire of rebellion broke out in Meerut cantonment against British rule, the entire country was affected by it. In the month of May 1857, Meerut city and soldier Mangal Pandey started a war. At that time, TK Lloyd was the British collector in Hamirpur. Kanpur, the headquarters of the 56th Native Infantry Force under the jurisdiction of Hamirpur, was also going through a period of military discontent. With the news of discontent and rebellion spreading all around, the patriots of Hamirpur also mobilized against the British administration. Revolt broke out against the British in Hamirpur on 13 June 1857. On the same day, the armed guards posted at the Treasury revolted. The mob attacked the Collector's residence.

It is said that a group of freedom fighters along with the local people first attacked the collector's residence and then raided the jail and freed the prisoners. When the crowd attacked the jail, the European prisoners escaped while the other prisoners were killed. The situation in Hamirpur became tense during the war that started against the British.

Due to the attack of the mob, British Collector TK Lloyd and Joint Magistrate Donald Grant left their bungalow and hid in the bushes near the confluence of Yamuna and Betwa along the Yamuna bank. A mob of freedom fighters and local people surrounded them near the confluence and tied them with ropes and beat them badly. Then both of them were brought to Hamirpur court after being beaten. According to the historical events, both the British officers caught by the rebels were brought to Hamirpur by running 6 km on foot and both were beaten mercilessly. Both the British administrators were brought to Hamirpur court premises and shot dead in public. During this, the freedom fighters had shouted Bharat Mata Ki Jai.

When the Gaur Rajputs of Surauli Buzurg of Hamirpur looted the boat full of guns of the British crossing the Yamuna river, the British army destroyed this village. Girdhari thekedar was killed. During the rebellion, Nawab Hussain Khan of Bihuni arranged 100 men and a gun to help Collector TK Lloyd. Lloyd recruited 500 new soldiers.
