Washington: The United States has commended the Government of India and the people of India for the smooth conduct of the Indian Lok Sabha elections.
The United States thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his third term, particularly the fact that the NDA led by Narendra Modi managed to secure a narrow majority despite the defeat of the BJP and the victory of the NDA in the caucus elections in the Hindi Belt. It termed it a 'Lok-Mat' (referendum) for the popularity of Narendra Modi.
It is well known that the Election Commission had declared that BJP has got 240 seats. Whereas the main opposition party Congress has got 99 seats.
Even before the Election Commission's announcement on Tuesday, America was keeping an eye on the 'trends'. Before the full results were announced, US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said, 'On behalf of the US government, we congratulate the Indian government and the voters of India for successfully completing such a big process. We are waiting for the final results.'
Matthew Miller said this in response to a question asked at the daily press conference after India's ruling coalition NDA crossed the majority mark of 272 seats.
When asked by reporters to comment on India's election results, Miller said, “The first thing is that as far as we know, the election results have not come yet. So we are refraining from making any definite comment about this. Until the election results are fully declared, we will not make any comment about the winner or the loser. But in our opinion, this long election process going on for the last six weeks was becoming unforgettable in the history of democracy. The people of India deserve thanks for this.”
Along with this, Matthew Miller said that no matter which government comes to power in India, the close partnership between India and America will continue.
