Lucknow, 28 August (HS). In a review meeting with departmental officials, Jal Shakti Minister Swatantradev Singh gave strict guidelines regarding the strengthening of embankments and safety of canals.
Jalshakti Minister said that strict action will be taken against the concerned officer if negligence is found in the maintenance of canals. Periodic inspections should be conducted to ensure the safety of all embankments. If embankments are damaged anywhere due to excessive rainfall or other reasons, then they should be repaired immediately. Also, the concerned officer must compulsorily inspect the canal tracks and embankments from time to time. All officers and employees should remain at their place of posting, do not go out of the headquarters without prior information. Pay special attention to the maintenance of the assets under the department, keep getting them repaired from time to time.
While giving instructions regarding the flood affected areas at the headquarters of the Irrigation and Water Resources Department located in Udayganj, the Jalshakti Minister said that all the officers and employees of the flood affected districts should keep a constant vigil on the situation. All the officers and employees of the flood sensitive districts should maintain regular contact with the district administration, so that any emergency situation can be dealt with. The water level of the rivers and the embankments should be constantly monitored. The officers and employees posted at the flood posts should constantly keep an eye on the situation. To deal with any sudden or emergency situation, adequate reserve stock should be arranged on all the embankments and the details of the names and mobile numbers of such contractors should also be kept. So that immediate arrangement of labor and material can be made in an emergency situation. Lighting should also be arranged on the embankments.
Jalshakti Minister, while taking information about tail feeding in canals, directed that water should be ensured to reach the tail of canals, there should be no negligence in this work. There should be no negligence in the availability of water for irrigation to farmers. He took information from the officers about the width and depth of the canals under their control at the time of construction and at present and also took information about the reasons for the water holding capacity of the canals which are currently low and also took suggestions to bring them back to their previous state. He said that the tracks of the canals under the department should be made pothole-free by running a campaign, where the weather is not conducive for road construction, ensure immediate movement there and as soon as the weather becomes conducive, get permanent work done and make the roads pothole-free.
Jalshakti Minister said that while instructing the employees engaged in the security of embankments not to go on leave, he said that there should be 24 hour surveillance on dams and canals. He also instructed that there should be no loss of life and property due to damage to embankments. If there is any information about leakage etc. anywhere, repairs should be done immediately.
Chief Engineer and Head of Department Akhilesh Kumar Sachan, Chief Engineer Design and Planning Sandeep Kumar, along with the concerned regional Chief Engineer, Superintending Engineer, Executive Engineer and other departmental officers were present in the meeting.
