The ICC has accused Sri Lankan spinner Praveen Jayawickrama of violating the Anti-Corruption Code. The ICC said on Thursday that the Sri Lankan spinner has violated three rules. Jayawickrama is accused of not informing the apex body of cricket when he was contacted about match fixing. Apart from this, he also tried to obstruct the investigation.
According to the ICC, Jayawickrama was approached to fix matches during the 2021 season of the Lanka Premier League played in Sri Lanka. Apart from this, he was asked to fix another player in the same tournament.
Jayawickrama has 14 days to prove the allegations are false
The ICC said in its statement that the Sri Lankan player deleted the messages in which he was asked about fixing. The ICC said in its statement, “The Sri Lankan bowler deleted his messages asking him to fix the match. Jayawickrama has 14 days from August 6 to respond to the allegations leveled against him.”
Debuted in 2021
The Sri Lankan bowler made his international cricket debut in the year 2021. He played his first Test match against Bangladesh in April. Jayawickrama took 11 wickets in this match. He played his last match for Sri Lanka in June 2022. He has played five Test matches for Sri Lanka so far in which he has taken 25 wickets. In ODIs, he has taken only five wickets in five matches for Sri Lanka. In T20 too, he has played five matches for his country and taken two wickets.
