Today, Advani is the biggest force behind BJP's power. It was Advani who sharpened BJP's political edge by organising Ayodhya Rath Yatra in 1992. In parliamentary politics, Advani won the election from Gandhinagar seat for the first time in 1991. After this, Gandhinagar seat was lucky to send him to the parliament six times in 1998, 1999, 2004, 2009 and 2014. However, he did not contest the election in 1996 due to the Babri case.

For the first time in the history of independent India, Advani started a historic Rath Yatra

Today's generation may not even be aware of how much influence Advani once had in Indian politics. When Advani started the Rath Yatra, he was not only promoting Hindutva but also the BJP. Such a political rally in the name of religion had never happened before in the history of independent India. The result was that in just a few years the number of BJP seats in Parliament increased from two to 182. Along with this, BJP started spreading from its stronghold of North India to other regions as well.
