Rs 2.95 crore sanctioned for renovation of Omni Bus Stand at Saithi Road in Tamil Nadu

Coimbatore: The Commissionerate of Municipal Administration (CMA) has sanctioned Rs 2.95 crore for the omni bus stand renovation project on Sathy Road in Coimbatore under the CGF fund. Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation (CCMC) has issued tender for the work and released the project designs of the new bus stand.

Omni Bus Stand on Saithi Main Road is one of the busiest bus terminals in the city. While government buses have a terminus at Singanallur, Gandhipuram, Ukkadam and Mettupalayam Road, private buses operate from the Omni Bus Stand near Gandhipuram flyover.

The bus terminal, spread over approximately 1.5 acres of land, was facing many problems due to lack of space, lack of facilities and increasing number of private buses. After the Gandhipuram flyover connecting Dr. Nanjappa Road to Sathi Main Road through GP signal is fully constructed, the authorities planned to shift the omni bus stand to a different location in view of the increase in traffic congestion . But, the plan was abandoned after the announcement of Vellore Integrated Bus Terminus project.

As omni bus operators and the public waited for the shifting of the bus stand, the Vellore IBT project came to a sudden halt. In such a situation, CCMC officials planned to give a new look to the Omni bus stand. A proposal was sent by CCMC to CMA seeking funds under Central Grant Fund (CGF) for the Omni Bus Stand Renovation Project. CMA has now given approval and funds for this project.

Speaking to TNIE, CCMC Commissioner M Pratap said, “The DPR that we sent to the state government for the Sathi Road Omni Bus Stand Renovation Project has now been approved. A sum of Rs 2.95 crore has been sanctioned for the project by CMA under the CGF scheme. The tender for the work will be issued on September 20 and bidding will begin soon.

“We are going to set up various facilities like toilets, terrace, hostel, dining room for mothers, cloakroom and parking facilities. The dilapidated road will also be repaired. Once the work starts, the project will be completed in about 6 months,” he said.
