But still these notes worth more than seven thousand crore rupees have been pressed. The Reserve Bank of India gave a big update on these notes on the first day of October and said that despite being withdrawn from circulation, till now only 98 percent of the total notes of Rs 2,000 have been returned.
Still waiting for return of two cent notes
On Tuesday, October 1, 2024, the central bank RBI, while sharing data on the return of demonetised Rs 2000 notes, said that 98 percent of the notes of this denomination have been returned to the banks. According to the information, the Reserve Bank has said that people still have pink notes worth Rs 7,117 crore. After the demonetization of these notes, it initially improved rapidly, but now it is recovering very slowly.
How many notes have been returned since July?
According to the data shared by the Reserve Bank of India on July 1, 2024, two thousand rupee notes worth Rs 7,581 crore were left in the market, while even till September 1, this figure could not come below Rs 7,000 crore. Only Rs 320 crore notes have been returned in these two months. Now looking at the October figures, the slow pace of demonetization can be clearly estimated. Last year, when these notes were discontinued in May 2023, notes worth Rs 3.56 lakh crore were present in the market and by December 29, 2023, this figure had reduced to Rs 9,330 crore.
After demonetization new notes of Rs 2000 were introduced
RBI had introduced Rs 2,000 notes in November-2016, when the government had decided to demonetize Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes. After this, the objective of introducing pink bank notes of Rs 2,000 was accomplished when sufficient bank notes of this value became available. RBI said that for this, printing of Rs 2,000 bank notes was stopped in the year 2018-19.
When and why were 2000 rupee notes banned?
Under the Clean Note Policy, RBI announced the withdrawal of this highest denomination Rs 2000 note from circulation in the country on May 19, 2023. After this, the central bank gave time from May 23 to September 30-2023 to local banks and 19 regional offices of RBI to return and exchange these notes. However, after that this deadline kept getting extended continuously.
You can still deposit Rs 2000 notes
It is noteworthy that Rs 2,000 notes can still be exchanged. However, this will not be possible in local banks. The central bank has already clarified that these demonetised pink notes will be deposited in 19 RBI offices, which are Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Belapur, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Kanpur, Kolkata. , Lucknow. People can deposit these notes through India Post at any post office nearest to them apart from going to Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Patna and Thiruvananthapuram.
