A scuffle broke out between two groups of students over allegedly serving non-vegetarian food in the hostel canteen on the occasion of Ram Navami. The incident took place at Kaveri Hostel in JNU at 3.30 pm.

According to Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU), members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) assaulted the mess secretary and prevented the staff from serving non-vegetarian food in the hostel.

According to the ABVP, the student wing of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), members of Left organizations tried to stop a puja in the hostel. Both the factions have accused each other of throwing stones and injuring their members. Police were called to the premises after the incident.

It is learned that there was no incident of violence after the incident but protests were held which ended.

According to JNUSU, ABVP has resorted to assault and intimidation. They were attacking the mess committee for changing the dinner menu for all the students and removing normal non-vegetarian food from it. JNU and its hostels are not just for a particular class but for all classes of students.

ABVP has denied the allegations of JNUSU in this regard. According to ABVP, on the auspicious occasion of Ram Navami, some students performed puja and havan at Kaveri Hostel in the afternoon. A large number of ordinary students of JNU participated in the puja. Left ideologues marched there to protest, obstruct and stop worship. He has given a false statement on the issue of ‘right to food’.

It is learned that some students are still protesting around the campus. The injured students have been admitted to a nearby hospital for treatment.
