The main theme of the Bollywood film ‘Pink’ revolves around the ‘No Means No’ theme in a sexual relationship. A recent survey has revealed many information about this matter. According to the National Family Health Survey (NFHS)-5 for 2019-20, 78% of women and 69% of men say that married women can refuse to have sex with their husbands.
According to the survey, a wife knows that her husband has a sexually transmitted disease, if her husband has sex with another woman, or if she is tired, or if she does not want to have sex.
Compared to the 2015-16 survey, there has been an increase in the number of married women believing they have the right to have sex. In 2005-06, 65% of married women believed that it was their right to refuse sex to a husband.
There has been a slight increase in the number of men supporting it. Although Gujarat is behind Maharashtra in this matter. In Maharashtra, 86 percent of women and 76 percent of men believe that a wife has a right to refuse sex during marriage.
Seventy-five percent of men in Gujarat believe that if the wife refuses, there is no need for the husband to get angry with her or quarrel with her or stop her financial help or force her to have extramarital affairs at this time.
However, a woman employee associated with the 181 women’s helpline says that what has been said in the survey about the desire of the wife to have sex is quite different from the reality. Women suffer a lot, they call only when their stamina is low. In Gujarat, 33.343 women have been surveyed in the survey of NHFS-5.
Of these, 13 percent of women aged 18 to 49 have experienced physical violence. While 3 percent of women have experienced sexual violence. 14% of women face both. The survey also reveals that women are victims of physical and sexual violence during marriage in the society.
Education has not brought any change in this regard. It is found in 3.8 percent of cases in women aged 25 to 39 years. This ratio is 3% in urban areas and 3.7% in rural areas. This condition is found in 2.8 percent of the highly educated class. Against which the position in the less educated category is 3.1 percent. The wife is subjected to physical and sexual violence by a husband who is addicted to alcohol.
