Indian Soldiers: It is a matter of great concern that the number of military suicides in the country is increasing continuously. Apart from this, the number of martyrs posted on duty in Naxal affected areas is also increasing. According to a report from India, CRPF personnel have the highest number of martyrs.

According to the information received, 950 CRPF personnel posted in Naxal-affected areas of Jammu and Kashmir have been martyred in the line of duty in the last three years. On the other hand, if we look at the suicide figures of the soldiers, then in the year 2021, 153 soldiers have committed suicide. Of these, 56 belonged to the CRPF and 42 to the BSA. The number of martyrs in Naxal-affected areas is 57 percent. In 2019, 622 persons including 15 gazetted officers, 691 persons including 14 gazetted officers in 2020 and 729 jawans including 18 gazetted officers were killed in 2021.

680 soldiers killed during 2015-20

According to the Home Ministry, the number of suicides among Central Armed Police Force personnel, including BSF, CRPF and SSB, is more than the number of encounters between 2015 and 2020. Between 2015-2020, around 680 soldiers attempted suicide, while 323 soldiers were killed in clashes. This means that the suicide rate of soldiers is more than twice that of martyrs.

What is the reason for suicide?

Former ADG PK Mishra said that soldiers often have to bear the brunt of shortage of hi-tech weapons. Even a small mistake in following SOPs can cost you dearly. Apart from this, family members also commit suicide due to family reasons. Diseases in remote areas also cause their death.
