Rajnandgaon : In Khairagarh assembly by-election, Congress candidate Yashoda Verma defeated BJP candidate Komal Janghel by a margin of more than 20 thousand votes. Verma’s victory was decided after the completion of the 21st round of counting. Meanwhile, Jungel said that he has accepted the verdict of the people.
Verma began his political career as a sarpanch, then served as a district panchayat member and president of the Block Congress Committee. Significantly, the Bhupesh Baghel-led party had announced that it would make Khairagarh-Chhuikhdan-Gandai a separate district. At present, the 5th seat is part of Rajnandgaon district.
Notably, both Verma and Janghel belong to the OBC community, who are numerically strong in the district. With the victory in the Khairagarh by-election, the Congress has got 71 seats in the Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly. BJP and BSP have 14 and two seats respectively, while JCCJ has three seats.
