Suncheon (South Korea): It was a disappointing day for Indian badminton players as Malvika Bansod lost in women’s singles while mixed doubles pair B. Sumeeth Reddy and Ashwini Ponnappa also lost in the second round of the Korea Open Badminton Championships 2022. Here at Palma Stadium. India’s Malvika Bansod, world number 65, lost 8-21, 14-21 to world number 10 and sixth seed Thai rival Pornpawee Chochuwong in a match that lasted 39 minutes.

Right from the opening game, Chochuwong dominated the proceedings by taking an early lead. In the second game, Malvika Bansod went head-to-head 3–3, but sixth-seeded Pornpawee Chochuwong won seven consecutive points to take a 10–3 lead and eventually went on to win the game 21–14. In mixed doubles, B. Sumeeth Reddy and Ashwini Ponnappa faced a tough three-game fight against China’s Xuan Yi Ou and Ya Qiang Huang. The Indian pair made a good start in the first game to take a 5-0 lead. Sumit Reddy-Ashwini Ponnappa went into the break to take an 11-7 lead. But the Chinese pair came from behind to take a 19-18 lead and eventually won the game 22-20.

In the second game too, the Indian pair took an early lead of 4-1. The Chinese pair won four points in a row to level 5-4. In a turnaround battle, Reddy-Ponappa won six consecutive points to take a 10-5 lead. Despite falling behind, the Chinese were able to make a comeback in the game and leveled at 16-16. The Indians got the better of their nerves to win the second game 21-18 to take the match to the decider.

In the third and final game, B. Sumeeth Reddy and Ashwini Ponnappa looked in complete disarray as the Chinese pair of Xuan Yi Ou and Ya Qiang Huang took a 10-2 lead. The Indian pair tried to fight back but it was too late for them as they lost the third and final game 14-21. B. Sumeeth Reddy and Ashwini Ponnappa went down 20-22 21-18 14-21 in the second round.
