New Delhi: The ICC board on Sunday assured its chairman Gregor Barkley to complete his term by the end of October, before the global body begins its nomination process to find a new chairman, where the Indian cricket board can play a bigger role.

In another significant development, Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Ramiz Raja’s proposal for a four-nation tournament has been unanimously rejected by the board, putting an end to speculations of several India vs Pakistan matches at nerve places.

The two-day board meeting that concluded in Dubai on Sunday was a win-win for the Indian cricket board as Barkley’s continuation till October gives enough time to strategize whether it will field a candidate for the top post in the month of November. .

A member of the ICC board told PTI on the terms, “There has been no discussion on the re-nomination of Barkley. But he will complete his current two-year term as chairman by the end of October. So the process to nominate a new chairman starts in November.” Of oblivion

Originally it was likely that the re-nomination or nomination would have taken place in the month of June but this changed after deliberations among the member boards.

The decision also helps BCCI take time out as their AGM is likely to be held in September after which the composition of the national parent body will be clear.

BCCI has already appealed, Lodha is demanding some changes in the constitution, which till date many feel that cannot be implemented practically.

It will be interesting to see whether president Sourav Ganguly and secretary Jay Shah go for a cooling-off in September. Shah’s name as the next ICC president is in the news, but neither the BCCI secretary himself nor sources close to him have confirmed that he is interested in throwing his hat in the ring.

Ramiz’s proposal was turned down by the board

PCB chairman Ramiz Raja’s ambitious proposal to organize a four-nation tournament, including India, Australia, England under the aegis of ICC, was unanimously rejected by the almighty board, even with an estimated revenue of USD 750 million for five years.

“In any case, the Financial and Commercial Affairs Committee (F&CA) of the ICC was against this proposal. As we know MPA (Member Participation Agreement) does not allow any member nation to host more than tri-nation, every four countries organize. The year will in any case devalue the ICC’s own flagship events,” said a board member.

Another sensitive issue on which board members are talking in a calm voice is whether Raja will continue to be the PCB chairman for a long time after Imran Khan is ousted as prime minister.

The PCB chairman is a political appointment as the PM of Pakistan is always the patron-in-chief of the board. Raja, therefore, may be forced to tender his resignation in the current political climate for the appointment of Imran Khan.

The BCCI has always been clear in its stand that it will not play four nations with its calendar chock-a-block and a lot of bilateral commitments need to be honored. On top of that is the player’s workload and mental health.

There were reports that Tom Harrison of the ECB was also interested in exploring ideas for a four-nation tournament independently, but it is now clear that nothing of the sort happened at the board meeting.
