Imran Khan has moved the Supreme Court amid the ongoing political crisis in Pakistan. He has demanded the formation of a judicial commission constituted by the Supreme Court under the Memogate scandal. Imran has made this demand because he has repeatedly called the no-confidence motion against him a “foreign conspiracy”. The Memogate scandal is also related to America.

Imran Khan has been continuously blaming America for the no-confidence motion. The US has denied the allegations. Approaching the Supreme Court, Imran said that just as a judicial commission was constituted to probe the Memogate scam, a judicial commission should be constituted at this time also. This commission should investigate horse-trading of corrupt politicians. Also, keep an eye on those whose relatives are seeking asylum in the West.

Imran Khan has made this demand at a time when the Supreme Court is hearing the matter of no-confidence motion and subsequent dissolution of the assembly. The matter is pending in the Supreme Court for four days, but no decision or order has been issued yet.

What was the Memogate scandal?

The terrorist attack on the World Trade Center in New York, USA on September 11, 2001. More than 3,000 people were killed in this attack. Al Qaeda carried out this attack.

On 2 May 2011, 10 years after the attack, the United States killed Osama bin Laden in Abbottabad, Pakistan. After Osama bin Laden was killed, the Pakistani government feared a military coup. At that time the President of Pakistan was Asim Ali Zardari.

On October 10, 2011, Mansoor Ajaz, a Pakistani-American businessman, referred to a “memo” or “letter” in a newspaper article. Ajaz claimed that on 10 May 2011, a letter was sent by the Pakistani government to US Army Chief Admiral Michael Mullen.

“The memo was written on behalf of President Zardari by Hassan Haqqani, Pakistan’s ambassador to the United States,” Ajaz wrote in the article. In this, Haqqani called on the US military to take Pakistan’s army under its control.

There is no signature on this memorandum. But after this claim of Ajaz, the season was horrifying. The rift between the Pakistani government and the army also became known. Asif Ali Zardari and Haqqani both walked away from the memo, but the opposition triumphed. Haqqani had to resign only a month and a half after Ajaz’s claim.

According to media reports, it has been said in the memo that after the death of bin Laden, the Pakistani army can overthrow the Pakistani government. So US army should help them now and control Pakistani army.

Michael Mullen also confirmed that he had received such a memo, but did not heed it. At the same time, the Pakistani army called it a conspiracy against itself.

Judicial commission probed for 7 years

After the Memogate scandal came to the fore, the matter reached the Supreme Court. In December 2011, the Supreme Court set up a judicial commission to investigate the incident. The commission investigated for 7 years.

The case was closed by the Supreme Court in February 2019. The top court said that if the government wants, it can take action against Hasan Haqqani.

Why is Imran also demanding such a probe?

Opposition groups called the rejection of the no-confidence motion and subsequent dissolution of Parliament “unconstitutional”. The Supreme Court has also said that the no-confidence motion cannot be dismissed.

Imran Khan is asking his workers to prepare for the elections, but they too are getting caught in this whole political crisis. In such a situation, Imran is now demanding the formation of a judicial commission like the Mammootty case.

Imran has been consistently claiming that the no-confidence motion against him was a foreign conspiracy. Imran claims that the opposition has received money from abroad to overthrow his government.

Imran also showed a secret letter during a rally in Islamabad on March 27. He claimed that the letter states that Pakistan’s troubles will increase if the no-confidence motion against Imran fails.
