Islamabad: The opposition parties have named Shahbaz Sharif of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) as their joint candidate for the country’s prime ministerial elections to be held on Monday. The National Assembly will on Monday elect the new Prime Minister of Pakistan after Imran Khan was ousted via a no-confidence motion.

ARY News quoted sources as saying that the PML-N has collected more than one nomination paper for the elections from the NA Secretariat. The members of the United Opposition will also submit the nomination papers for Shahbaz Sharif. According to ARY News, PTI has not yet sought nomination papers for the Prime Minister’s election. Pakistani media reported that nominations for the elections can be submitted to the Assembly Secretary by 2 pm today.

The Leader of the United Opposition will submit the nomination papers, which will come under scrutiny at 3 pm and the list of candidates will be displayed after scrutiny. Shehbaz Sharif will return unopposed if no other candidate submits his nomination papers against him. The timing of the session of the National Assembly to be held on Monday to elect the new Prime Minister of Pakistan has changed. As per the report of ARY News, the session of the National Assembly to elect the new Prime Minister will now be held at 2 pm on Monday, unlike the earlier schedule at 11 pm.

Apart from this, tight security arrangements are still in place around D-Chowk with police and police say that the roads leading to Parliament will be opened after the election of the new prime minister.
