India refrained from voting on a resolution to suspend Russia from the UNHCR. The motion got 93 votes in favor and 24 against. 58 did not take part in the voting. UNGAA Russia has since been suspended from the UNHRC.

 

India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations TS Thirumurthy said India stayed away from the resolution on the Russian Federation that was passed in the United Nations General Assembly today. We are concerned about the worsening situation and reiterate our call to end all hostilities. When innocent human lives are at stake, diplomacy should prevail as the only viable option. The recent reports of civilian casualties in Bucha are disturbing. We strongly condemn these killings and support the call for an independent investigation.

“We are in a unique situation when a member of the UNHRC commits horrific human rights abuses on the territory of another sovereign state, which are tantamount to war crimes and crimes against humanity,” the Ukrainian representative said. The suspension of the Russian Federation’s membership rights in the UNHRC is not an option, but a duty.”
