A DNA test conducted 28 years after an alleged rape could lead to an accused being sent to jail. Police said the DNA of a child conceived by the woman after she was repeatedly raped by two brothers in 1994, when she was just 13, was matched with that of an accused.
An FIR was registered against the accused Hasan and Guddu in March last year following a court order. Superintendent of Police (city) Sanjay Kumar told PTI, “The DNA test was done on the orders of the court. The samples of the victim’s son and the two accused were tested. The report confirmed that Guddu’s DNA matches with that of the victim’s son. Based on this information, we have formed a team to arrest the accused.”
According to the police, the woman was living in Shahjahanpur with her relatives in 1994 and the accused lived in the same neighborhood and were older than her.
The family members came to know about the rape when she became pregnant, police said, adding that she gave birth to the child in the same year.
However, the child was separated from her and a couple adopted her.
Later the woman got married but when the husband came to know about the rape incident, he left her.
After coming to know about the incident, the woman remained alone for several years until her son came in contact with her a few years back. Police said he supported her and encouraged her to register an FIR.
The woman first approached the police regarding the matter and later filed a petition in the local court seeking registration of an FIR.
According to the police, the accused runs a small business in Shahjahanpur and still lives in the same area.
“They are absconding since last week and a police team has been formed to arrest them,” the officer said.
