The number of deaths in two villages of Sangrur district due to drinking poisonous liquor made at home after watching YouTube has reached eight. All of them were from villages Gujjar and Dhandoli of assembly constituency Didba and about a dozen of them are currently undergoing treatment at Rajindra and Sangrur Civil Hospitals in Patiala. Four youths have also been arrested for preparing cheap liquor using ethanol and other ingredients.
One bottle of this was prepared for Rs 50 and they sold it for Rs 150. Don't know how many people lost their lives while having fun by drinking cheap liquor and left behind dozens of dependents crying and crying. This incident has once again exposed the huge disadvantages of social media. It would not be an exaggeration if we say that it is not alcohol but the poison of social media that has taken so many lives.
Most of the immature and inexperienced youth often use social media for destructive purposes instead of taking any spontaneous and constructive benefits. Thus, they have made this useful tool anti-social. Actually, smartphones look good only in the hands of 'smart' people. There is a vast wealth of knowledge available on the Internet and people are taking full advantage of it. But there is also a lot of negative content on it and a lot of people read it. Wi-Fi internet facility is free at railway stations.
Some time ago, data of internet usage at Patna Junction was released. Their analysis revealed that the highest number of porn films have been watched there. No one even tried to read literature or constructive news and reports in Hindi or any other language. Therefore, it can be easily said that while drug addiction has taken the lives of a generation in Punjab, social and cultural degradation is also taking place through the internet.
According to a report for the year 2023, an Indian citizen consumes an average of 24.1 GB of data every month, which is 24 percent more than the usage in 2022. In fact, due to reasons like the arrival of 5-G and reduction in prices, there has been a significant increase in internet usage. India has the second largest telecommunication network in the world. An average of 17.4 billion GB of data is consumed every year across India.
Statistics show that 5G network is now covering not only the big cities of India but also every small town. By the year 2023, 20% of the total traffic of this network was being used in cities and 17, 12 and 14% in A, B and C telecom circles respectively. If despite using so much, the youth get only negative information from the Internet, then what benefit can it bring to the society?
