Mushroom like snake god in Assam: A strange case of superstition has come to light in Amloga village of Chariduwar in Sonitpur district of Assam. Here people considered a wild plant to be a ‘snake god’ and started worshiping it.
The incident occurred when Tilak Koch, a village man, was cleaning the bushes behind his house. Meanwhile, they saw a strange snake-like shape emerging from the ground. Tilak found this to be a miraculous discovery and soon the news spread throughout the village.

A crowd of devotees gathered around Tilak’s house. People started worshiping him considering him as a snake god. Some people consider it a symbol of prosperity and happiness, burn incense sticks, pray and seek blessings from this figure.
Scientists told the truth!
However, all this did not last long. Shubham Roy, assistant lecturer, Department of Botany, Rangapara College, and his students investigated the incident. They discovered that what was believed to be a snake god was actually a wild mushroom.

This mushroom from the Department of Botany, Rangapara College is one of the fungal species that grows in the humid conditions of Assam. The department has identified and documented around 40 different mushroom species in the last one year. This particular mushroom was identified as a rare but naturally occurring species.
