Paris Olympics, Vinesh Phogat: The biggest sporting event Paris Olympics is set to end on 11 August 2024. Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat reached the final of the 50 kg wrestling league event. But she was disqualified as her weight was 100 grams more than the prescribed criteria.

Vinesh Phogat appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against her disqualification and demanded that she be awarded the joint silver medal. However, the CAA rejected this appeal of wrestler Vinesh Phogat. That is, now Vinesh will not get the silver medal. Its hearing was done, but the date of the decision kept getting postponed. But now the decision came in this case on Wednesday (14 August).

the matter is not completely over

Despite the decision of CASA, the matter is not completely over. Vinesh can challenge this decision in court. According to the CAS website, any decision of CAS can be challenged. But there must be proper grounds for this. Judicial assistance is given in the Swiss Federal Tribunal only on very limited grounds, such as lack of jurisdiction, violation of rules (such as violation of the right to fairness in a fair hearing).

Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President PT Usha expressed disappointment over the CAS decision. Usha said that the IO will take legal help in this matter. The IOA is with Vinesh and we are considering other legal options.

What is the function of CAS?

Senior advocate Vidushpat Singhania, representing the IOA in this case, said that CES has given only a one-line decision. Only after seeing the full report when they release it, we will be able to say something in detail about it and decide what to do next. This decision means that India will now have only 6 medals in the Paris Olympics. Which includes one silver and 5 bronze medals.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) is an independent body established worldwide for sports. Its function is to resolve judicial disputes related to sports. Established in 1984, this international body works to resolve sports-related disputes through arbitration. Its headquarters is in Logan, Switzerland. And its courts are located in New York City, Sydney and Logan. Temporary courts have also been set up in the host cities in the current Paris Olympics.
