Hockey India, which took the lead by scoring the first goal in this close contest, was out of the medal race in the Paris Olympics due to its inability to score in the last six minutes. However, the entire match will be remembered for Germany's defense and Indian attack.
The Indian men's hockey team showed speed right from the beginning in the semi-final match against Germany and took a 1-0 lead in the first quarter itself. For India, Harmanpreet Singh scored a goal by capitalizing on a penalty corner and gave India the lead. This was Harmanpreet's eighth goal in the Paris Olympics. Germany equalized the score to 1-1 by scoring a goal on a penalty corner in the second quarter. Gonzalo Pilat scored a goal for Germany in the 18th minute. Christopher Ruehr scored a brilliant goal on a penalty stroke in the second quarter itself and gave the team a 2-1 lead. This goal came for Germany in the 27th minute of the quarter.
After taking a 1-0 lead in the first quarter and falling 2-1 behind in the second quarter, the Indian team made a comeback in the third quarter. In the 36th minute of the match, Sukhjeet Singh converted a penalty corner into a goal and leveled the score at 2-2. Then for about 17 minutes, both teams kept trying to take the lead but were unsuccessful. But when the last 6 minutes were left in the match, Marco Miltkau scored a goal for Germany in the 54th minute and gave Germany a crucial 3-2 lead over India. Ultimately, this score remained unchanged and Germany won the match.
