Panic due to landmine explosion on Nepal’s East-West Highway, traffic blocked

Kathmandu, 17 September (HS). The landmine explosion on Nepal’s East-West Highway has not only created an atmosphere of panic in the area but has also disrupted traffic due to damage to the road. However, there is no news of loss of life or property due to the explosion.

Local police received news of a sudden explosion on the highway on Sunday morning. As soon as news of a loud explosion near Rapti Sonari village on the Banke district section of the East-West Highway was received, the Nepali Army’s bomb disposal squad and police team reached the spot. After preliminary investigation, the Army said that it was a landmine explosion which was hidden at various places by the Maoists during the conflict about a decade ago. More than half of the highway where the explosion occurred has been completely damaged.

The police have stopped the traffic as a precaution. DSP Narayan Dangi said that after the explosion of a landmine laid ten-twelve years ago, the area is being investigated by the Army’s bomb disposal squad for security reasons. After investigation, traffic will be operated one-way as the road has been damaged due to the blast.
