Bhagat Singh Punishment Case Reopened: There is an uproar in Pakistan over the hanging of Bhagat Singh after 92 years. The Lahore High Court has objected to the reopening of the death sentence case of 1931 freedom struggle hero Bhagat Singh. There was a demand to honor Singh posthumously. The court has expressed objection to this.
Bhagat Singh was tried on charges of conspiracy against British rule. He was hanged along with Rajguru and Sukhdev on 19 March 1931. Bhagat Singh was initially sentenced to life imprisonment by the British, but he was later convicted in a ‘fabricated case’ and sentenced to death.
A panel of lawyers had filed a petition in the Lahore High Court demanding cancellation of Bhagat Singh’s sentence. Advocate Imtiaz Rashid Qureshi, associated with the panel, said that the High Court has objected to the reopening of Bhagat Singh’s case and constituting a constitutional bench for its immediate hearing. The court said that this case does not deserve to be heard before a larger bench.
Petitioner Qureshi said that a panel of senior lawyers, of which he is a part, had filed the petition in the Lahore High Court. This petition has been pending for the last decade. In 2013, the then Justice Shujaat Ali Khan had sent the matter to the Chief Justice to constitute a larger bench, but since then the matter is pending. Now the High Court has declared this petition not worthy of hearing and has objected to the formation of a larger bench.
Qureshi claimed that the judges hearing Bhagat Singh’s case at that time had given death sentence to 450 witnesses without hearing them. Bhagat Singh’s lawyers were also not given a chance to cross-examine. He said that we will prove the innocence of Bhagat Singh in the Sanders case.
