Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan's troubles are not going to end. Islamabad Police arrested senior leaders of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party outside the Parliament House after the National Assembly session.
Top leaders of jailed former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan's party were arrested by police outside the Parliament House on Monday after the National Assembly session, according to media reports. Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party leaders Barrister Gauhar Ali Khan, Sher Afzal Khan Marwat and lawyer Shoaib Shaheen have been arrested by Islamabad police, Dawn newspaper quoted police spokesperson Javed Taqi as saying.
'Direct attack on democracy'
Regarding the arrest of Sher Afzal Khan Marwat, the PTI party said in a post on 'X', “The PMLN government should be completely ashamed of such a move against a sitting member of the National Assembly. This is a direct attack on democracy.” The party called the Islamabad police “illegal order” and called on the Islamabad Police Inspector General (IG) to “stop this action.”
“The Pak government has once again proved how scared it is of Imran Khan and his comrades,” Marwat said in a statement posted on Twitter. Opposition leader Umar Ayub Khan condemned the arrest and alleged that the Islamabad police had formed teams to arrest him, PTI leader Zartaj Gul Wazir and “other associates”.
Accused of altercation with police personnel
Sources told Geo News that Marwat has been arrested for violating rules under the new law – Peaceful Assembly and Public Order Bill, 2024. They said the PTI MP was accused of clashing with police personnel a day earlier. In another post, the PTI party condemned the arrest of party president Barrister Gauhar, calling it “illegal”.
Many more leaders may be arrested
Cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan, 71, is facing several legal cases and has been in jail for nearly a year after being convicted in a corruption case. Along with Umar and Zartaj, other PTI leaders including Hammad Azhar, Kanwal Shauzab, Naeem Haider Panjutha, Ameer Mughal and Khalid Khurshid are also likely to be arrested, sources said.
