Khyber Pakhtunkhwa : In a latest development, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has imposed restrictions that will require Chinese citizens to travel with armored vehicles in the region, Dawn reported. This decision was announced by a senior police officer during a meeting held on Wednesday.
Hazara Range Deputy Inspector General of Police Tahir Ayub Khan said, “Since we are taking all possible measures for the safety of Chinese nationals, they should not travel in the province without armored vehicles in line with government instructions.”
The meeting, called to discuss security arrangements for the Suki Kinari hydropower project in the Malakandi area of the Kaghan Valley, brought together key stakeholders including security personnel, sugar engineers and project managers.
During the discussions, emphasis was laid on ensuring stringent safety measures to protect the lives of people involved in critical infrastructure projects, Dawn reported.
While inspecting the sites of Suki Kinari and Balakot hydropower projects, DIG Tahir Ayub Khan reiterated the government's stand on maintaining high standards of safety. He stressed that residential colonies of Chinese engineers and workers will have boundary walls at least eight feet high, over which barbed wire can be installed for additional security.
The heightened security measures come in the wake of a recent incident in which a convoy of Chinese engineers working on the Dasu hydropower project in Shangla district was targeted in a suicide attack, resulting in casualties.
Following the attack, security concerns have increased, prompting authorities to take proactive steps to mitigate risks and ensure the safety of foreign nationals.
