There is big news for those studying medicine or preparing for NEET. In India The pattern of medical studies has been changed. The National Medical Commission (NMC) is now going to implement the Competency Based Medical Education (CBME) curriculum in MBBS studies. New guidelines have been issued regarding this. The new guidelines of CBME will be mandatory for all medical colleges in India. The institutions will have to strictly follow them. These guidelines will replace the previous curriculum and will be implemented from the MBBS batch of 2024-25.
What is CBME course in MBBS?
The full form of CBME is – Competency Based Medical Education. This course is designed for the new generation of Indian medical graduates. It will prepare new doctors to work as primary healthcare providers for the people. It will equip them with the knowledge, skills and vision required for this.
Unlike traditional curricula that emphasize theoretical knowledge, the CBME curriculum focuses on practical ability and real-world applications. This ensures that medical students can effectively diagnose, treat, and manage a variety of medical conditions. This curriculum will focus on 5 main points, which are explained below. 1. Outcome-based education
The new curriculum moves away from broad competencies and focuses on detailed and page-specific subject competencies. This ensures that students are not only familiar with theoretical concepts but can also apply them in practical scenarios. It aims to prepare medical graduates who are ready to handle real-life situations from the very first day of their practice. (Photo- Freepik)
2. Integrated approach
In this, emphasis is laid on moving forward by connecting subjects both vertically and horizontally. Horizontal integration means aligning topics in different subjects at one stage. Whereas vertical integration combines subjects at different stages. This approach helps students to understand the inter-relationship of various medical subjects. Through which they learn the application of their knowledge. (Photo- Freepik)
3. Ethics and communication
The new guidelines of NMC emphasize on the development of ethical values, communication skills and professionalism. A new module called AETCOM (Attitude, Ethics and Communication) has been introduced, which focuses on developing these essentials in future doctors. The module aims to develop the values of empathy, respect and professional conduct in doctors, which are essential for caring for patients. (Photo- Freepik)
