Manipur: 10 people injured in latest clash; Indian Army soldier on leave murdered

Imphal: At least 10 people, including a security force jawan, were injured during a clash between a mob and the Rapid Action Force (RAF), while security forces on Sunday recovered four weapons and 138 different types of ammunition looted from Imphal East district. -Ammunition has been recovered. Officials said.

Manipur Police arrested five people carrying sophisticated weapons and wearing camouflage uniforms at Porompat in Imphal East district on charges of impersonation, officials said.

Protesting the arrest, a large number of men and women came forward demanding his release and tried to storm the Porompat police station. Joint security forces foiled this attack by firing tear gas shells. Nine civilians and one RAF personnel suffered minor injuries in the melee.

Manipur Police said it is committed to continue such raids and actions and make every possible effort to bring peace and normalcy in the state. Along with this, Manipur Police appeals to the general public to avoid such protests and cooperate with the law enforcement agencies in bringing peace and normalcy in the state.

A police statement said there have been reports of extortion, threats, misuse of police uniform and impersonation by armed miscreants. In view of this, Manipur Police is making every possible effort to curb such illegal activities.

In another development, the body of an Indian Army soldier, who was abducted by some armed men on Saturday, was found in Imphal East district on Sunday, police said. The soldier had come home on leave.

Three armed men abducted Serto Thangthang Kom, 49, of the Defense Service Corps (DSC) at gunpoint on Saturday from his house at Tarung in Happy Valley in Imphal West district, police officials said.

His bullet-riddled body was found in Khuningthek village east of Imphal East district on Sunday. The soldier is survived by his wife, a daughter and a son.

The last rites will be performed as per the wishes of the family. An army team reached the house of the slain soldier to provide all possible assistance to the bereaved family.

The Indian Army strongly condemns this cowardly murder and will stand with his bereaved family at this difficult time. Thangthang, after taking voluntary retirement from the 8th Assam Regiment, was rejoined DSC a few years ago. He was on leave from his duty and was to join on Monday.

His wife Somivon Kom said their family is living in the Happy Valley area for the education of their two children.

President of Kom Union Manipur (KUM), Serto Ahou Kom, said that the Kom tribal community has survived as one of the minority communities in Manipur. He said, Kom community is a peace loving society and it does not indulge or discriminate against any community.
