Mumbai: Kangana Ranaut’s film ‘Emergency’, stuck between elections and legal disputes, will be released on January 17.

Kangana has played the character of Indira Gandhi in this film based on the emergency imposed during the reign of Indira Gandhi. He himself is also the producer and director of the film.

This film has been ready for a year. It was scheduled to be released in March this year. But, when Kangana contested the Lok Sabha elections, the film got stalled.

Later, there were demands to ban the film following controversy over its inaccurate portrayal of the Sikh community. The Censor Board stopped the certificate of the film. Due to this, the film could not be released on the previously announced date of 5th September.

Ultimately the dispute over the film reached the High Court. In the Bombay High Court, the Censor Board agreed to allow the release of the film provided the cuts suggested by it were retained.

The Censor Board re-reviewed the film and suggested some changes including 13 cuts in the film. After Kangana’s approval, the film was given U-A certificate.
