Canadian PM Justin Trudeau Politics: Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau suffered a major setback on Wednesday (September 1). The New Democratic Party (NDP), which was supporting Trudeau's minority government, withdrew its support. This move has left Trudeau needing a new coalition to run the government.
NDP leader Jagmeet Singh said, “I have run out of patience,” saying he would withdraw support from Trudeau in 2022. However, Trudeau dismissed talk of early elections, saying, “My priority is to advance social programs for the people of Canada. We will work for the people of Canada and hopefully we will complete our program by the next election.”
Trudeau's troubles increase!
After the withdrawal of support, Trudeau is now dependent on the opposition, especially when a vote of confidence will be needed in Parliament. According to current surveys, if elections are held, Trudeau's Liberal Party may face defeat. Canada will have to hold elections by October 2025. It is worth noting that Trudeau has been the Prime Minister since 2015, but for the last several years, the opposition, especially the Conservative Party, has been criticizing Trudeau over inflation and housing crisis.
Jagmeet Singh has now expressed displeasure over Trudeau's leadership and rising food prices. Singh said in a video on social media, 'Justice Trudeau has repeatedly succumbed to corporate temptation. The Liberals have betrayed the public so they should not get a second chance.'
However, the situation is not much better for the NDP either. According to the current survey, the party's performance is at number three. Jagmeet Singh has filed his candidature for the post of Prime Minister.
Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre also attacked Singh and Trudeau, saying they “together have made the country's economy worse and put people in trouble.” He called for a “carbon tax” election so that the public could decide whether to choose the current coalition or a “common sense” Conservative government.
