Resignation of PM Fumio Kishida: Japan's Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said during a press conference, “He will not contest the party president election to be held next month.” While Kishida has decided to step down as president, he will step down as the leader of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) in September. In Japan, the leader of the ruling party is elected as the Prime Minister. With this announcement by Kishida, it is now certain that the country will get a new Prime Minister in no time. On the other hand, Kishida's approval rating is believed to have fallen due to the LDP party being in controversy.
Liberal Democratic Party will bring change
Kishida said, “The party needs a new beginning. The party needs to tell people through internal elections that the Liberal Democratic Party will bring change.”
Kishida was being pressured to step down for a long time
By-elections were held in several Japanese cities last April. In which the LDP had to face defeat. After the defeat of the LDP party, there was a demand for Kishida's resignation. Therefore, there was pressure on Kishida to resign for a long time. On the other hand, elections are going to be held in Japan next October.
Kishida's approval rating drops as LDP party remains mired in controversy
While the LDP has been mired in controversy in Japan, party-related scandals, controversies over political funding and Kishida's steadily falling approval ratings have been cited as reasons. Kishida's approval rating fell below 20 percent in July. Kishida's ratings have been declining for the eighth consecutive month. Prime Minister Kishida's rating remained around 65 percent in 2021. In Japan, Kishida replaced Yoshihide Suga as Prime Minister in October 2021.
