Gaza: At least 39 people, including five children, were killed in an Israeli attack on a school early today (Thursday). The Palestinian Health Ministry said the death toll is still expected to rise. The Israeli army defended its action, saying that Hamas terrorists had taken refuge in that school.
An Israeli army spokesman said new ground attacks and air strikes were now underway in the eight-month-long war.
Observers say the fighting is escalating rather than slowing down. International voluntary health organizations have reported that the death toll from Thursday's attack is far higher.
Schools and hospitals in Israel are run by UNRWA, the Palestinian Displaced Persons Relief Agency and six other voluntary organisations. Of these, 30 bodies arrived at Al-Aqsa-Shahid-Hospital in Disal-Balah early in the morning.
The Israeli army said that there are hospitals where Palestinian terrorists are hiding, so such attacks are carried out. A displaced person, Mohammad al-Karim, said that chaos was seen outside the hospital. Vehicles bring the injured one by one. The injured are being treated on the floor as beds are missing.
