A court in Singapore has sentenced a man of Indian origin to 5 weeks in jail. The man is accused of punching a Singapore police officer while drunk. The man's name is Devesh Raj Rajasegaran and he is about 24 years old. Talking about the incident, Devesh punched a Singapore police officer while arguing in a crowd of more than 10 people in an inebriated state.

According to a report, one punch was so powerful that the officer lost consciousness for at least a minute and his memory was affected for a few days. Devesh Raj, 24, was sentenced to five weeks in jail on Tuesday. In March this year, Devesh was convicted of causing hurt with intent. Now Devesh will appeal against the sentence.

According to the court, the victim was one of the four police officers who were sent to the Circular Road area of ​​the Central Business District on June 25, 2022. A police member there told them at around 3 am that more than 10 people were arguing. Earlier, Devesh and his friend Ishwar Ravi were drinking alcohol nearby. When the police arrived, they saw that some people, including Devesh and Ishwar, were creating a ruckus on Circular Road. The officers, who were in plain clothes at the time and approached the group, then identified themselves as police officers. While the victim and another officer were interviewing a member of the group, Devesh came to them to confront the man and moments later Devesh threw a punch, which hit the police officer on the left side of the head.

A fine of more than 3 lakhs was imposed

According to court documents, the accused was in an inebriated condition when he punched the victim. The victim lost consciousness for at least a minute due to the accused's punch. The officer was later taken to Singapore General Hospital by ambulance. The victim was hospitalised for seven days and was reported to have suffered from memory loss and severe headaches for at least three days after the incident. For causing hurt, Devesh could be jailed for up to three years and ordered to pay a fine of SGD5,000 (approximately Rs 3.08 lakh) or both.
