Warsaw: Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Poland on Wednesday on a two-day visit. At the Good-Maharaja-Square here, two Maharajas of India, Digvijay Singh Ranjit Singh, had sheltered about 1,000 Polish women and children displaced by World War II, while the Maharaja of Kolhapur, a descendant of Chhatrapati Shivaji, had sheltered almost the same number of Polish citizens.
Not only this, but they also provided food for the first few months. After this, people who are experts in some technical matter were also given work.
Apart from this, the British government of India also sent soldiers of the then British-Indian Army along with the Polish Army to fight the German invasion. They fought alongside Polish soldiers against the Germans. A memorial to them has also been built in a park in Poland. There are three such memorials in a park near Warsaw. Prime Minister Modi paid floral tribute to all three.
On this post, Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote that the story of Dobri (good) Maharaja is the most controversial chapter in India-Poland relations. The generosity and compassion of these Maharajas will continue to inspire generations to come. These Maharajas have left a deep mark on India-Poland relations. Also, generations of Poland will remember those brave soldiers of India who sacrificed their lives for Poland.
