Indian Grandmaster R. Praggnanandhaa has created history by defeating world number 1 Magnus Carlsen in the Norway Chess Tournament. 18-year-old Indian Grandmaster Praggnanandhaa is the fourth Indian to defeat Magnus Carlsen in classical chess.
R. Praggnanandhaa won by 5.5 points after the third round. After winning, R. Praggnanandhaa said that both of us tried our best in the tough match but I won. Let us tell you that Praggnanandhaa was playing with white pawns and his victory took home favorite Carlsen to 5th place in the points table. Classical chess, also commonly known as slow chess, gives players plenty of time to make their moves, usually at least an hour.
In other matches of the third round, world number two Fabiano Caruana of America defeated defending world champion Ding Liren of China. After the defeat, Liren came down to the bottom of the list of six players. American Hikaru Nakamura won his Armageddon game against Alireza Firouzja of France to earn an additional half point and finish third in the standings. Nakamura will face Praggnanandhaa in the fourth round. Earlier in the men's category, Indian Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa had to face defeat in the Armageddon tie-breaker after a draw in normal time control against world champion Ding Liren in the second round.
