Haj journey: It is the dream of every Muslim to reach Mecca in Saudi Arabia for Hajj. The poorest of the poor Muslims try to perform Hajj once by saving every penny. However, reaching there is not easy. Because Muslims from all over the world reach Mecca to perform Hajj. Therefore, Saudi Arabia decides the number of Hajj pilgrims from all countries and according to that every Muslim from every country can go there, but this quota is so low that even after all the arrangements, it is not easy to gather the number of Hajj pilgrims. It starts after reaching Mecca and dealing with heat and overcrowding. Many times some people have died in Mecca due to this.
Customs of India and Pakistan
So far this year, 98 Indians who went to Mecca have died. Karnataka State Haj Committee Executive Officer S Sarfaraz Khan, in-charge of customs and regulations with the Saudi Arabian government, said that the bodies of the deceased during Haj are not brought back to their native place. Their bodies are buried there by the concerned authorities and death certificates are also handed over to their families. Pakistan Haj Mission Director General Abdul Wahab Soomro said on June 19 that a total of 35 Pakistani Haj pilgrims had died till June 18. 20 people died in Mecca, 6 in Medina, four in Mina, three in Arafat and two in Muzdalifa. He said that the Saudi government has made arrangements for burial in Harman and if any Pakistani pilgrim requests, arrangements have also been made to bring back the bodies through their heirs.
Deadly heat
No deaths have been officially reported from Saudi Arabia. However, more than 1000 people are reported dead. All these deaths have occurred due to heat. However, a large number of people are also dying during the Rami al-Jamarat ritual in the Mina Valley located on the outskirts of Mecca. There is often a crowd at that place during the stone pelting ritual. However, Saudi Arabia has now taken control of the matter, bringing the incident under control, but the heat is still proving to be fatal. The temperature in Mecca is still around 52 degrees Celsius.
What is life like for people living in Mecca?
According to the report, the Saudi government lifted a nationwide ban on cinemas in 2018, but there are still no theatres in Mecca. Residents travel to the city of Jeddah, about 70 kilometres away, to watch movies. Wedding halls are kept away from the sacred area. Resident Zainab Abdu says this is a holy city and should be respected. Music is played on birthdays and other occasions, but it should not be too loud. Once a year, the city's population effectively doubles for a month as Hajj pilgrims from around the world arrive, but we consider it our good fortune.
