There are two main reasons for the increased weather activity in Gujarat. Firstly, a cyclonic circulation is located in the lower atmosphere over the Sindh-Balochistan region of southwestern Pakistan. This system extends northwards through Kutch and Saurashtra to the Arabian Sea. The coast of South Gujarat is marked by an offshore trough, which extends southwards along the entire coast. Due to the combined effect of these two systems, weather activity (rain, thunderstorms, strong winds, lightning) is expected to increase over Gujarat in the next 3 days.

Coastal areas of South Gujarat will receive light rain, with intermittent heavy rain at some places. Navsari, Vapi, Valsad, Surat and Bharuch will receive heavy rain. Also, rain will be more intense and heavy in Saurashtra. The western region of Saurashtra will be more vulnerable to weather activity. The coastal area from Una-Diu to Somnath, Porbandar, Dwarka, Okha, Jamnagar, Khambhalia will be at risk of adverse weather. Such weather will prevail in the interior parts of Saurashtra including Junagadh, Rajkot, Morbi and Surendranagar. This activity may also affect some parts of Kutch including Kandla, Bhuj and Nalia.

In its update, the weather department said that a low pressure area has formed over central and adjoining north Bay of Bengal, leading to heavy to very heavy rainfall over coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, south Odisha, Goa, coastal Karnataka, parts of south Karnataka and Gujarat on July 18 and 19. Heavy rain is also likely at some places over Vidarbha and Chhattisgarh on July 20, the IMD said.
