Punjab Police has invoked Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) against Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh and other accused in the murder of Gurpreet Singh, a Sikh activist, in Hari Nau village of Faridkot district. This step may further increase the troubles of the jailed MP.
Gurpreet Singh murder case
It is noteworthy that this incident took place on October 10, 2022, when three assailants shot Gurpreet Singh dead. Terrorist Arsh Dalla has also been made an accused in this case.
New provisions added to FIR
On October 23, Kotkapura police had added organized crime section (Section 111 of BNS) to the FIR of the case. Currently, Khadur Sahib MP Amritpal Singh and his nine associates are lodged in Assam’s Dibrugarh jail under the National Security Act (NSA).
Reason for imposing UAPA
Police have claimed that some new revelations have come to light in the case, on the basis of which UAPA has been imposed.
According to sources, the police were finding it difficult to file the challan (charge sheet) in the court within the stipulated period of 90 days. In such a situation, it was decided to impose UAPA to protect the accused from default bail.
police statement
A senior police officer termed it a conspiracy related to anti-national activities. He said,
“This murder was a well-planned conspiracy to undermine the security of the nation and spread unrest. We have strong evidence that links all the accused to illegal activities. That is why action has been taken under UAPA.”
Police believe that imposition of UAPA will provide an opportunity to gather more concrete evidence in the investigation and the case will be strengthened.
