Kathmandu, 2 August (HS). With the change of power in Nepal, officials who were close to the previous Prachanda government have started facing action. Top government and police officials who were close to the former Prime Minister are either being transferred or orders have been issued for investigation against them.
The latest case is related to Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) chief Additional Inspector General of Police (AIG) Shyamlal Gyawali. The Home Ministry has started an investigation against Gyawali for acquiring assets disproportionate to his income, suppressing high profile cases through improper transactions, and harassing the leaders of the then opposition party under political protection.
Nepal Police chief Inspector General of Police Vasant Kunwar has accepted the initiation of a departmental inquiry against his AIG Shyamlal Gyawali. He said that soon after AIG Gyawali took over the responsibility of CIB chief, many written complaints were continuously received against him. Inquiry is being conducted on the basis of that. Some senior police officials even said that the previous Prachanda government had conspired to implicate the current police chief in some allegation by using Gyawali. They claim that Gyawali wanted to become IGP himself by removing IGP Kunwar from the post.
In the departmental team formed for the investigation against AIG Gyawali, police officer Tek Bahadur Rai of his own batch has been given this responsibility. Police spokesperson DIG Dan Bahadur Karki said that SSP Naveen Rai of Crime Branch Kathmandu, SP Prakash Malla, DSP Rook Bahadur Khadka of Legal Cell and DSP Mukesh Tiwari have been included in the investigation committee formed under the leadership of AIG Rai.
According to police sources, AIG Shyamlal Gyawali has been accused of suppressing the case of billionaire businessman and Nepali Congress MP Vinod Chaudhary's Bansbari land case by making transactions, making transactions with another big businessman Vishal Group in the land case of the government children's organization, arresting the chairman of Century Bank and others and extorting money from them. Apart from this, an absconding accused in the case of smuggling of one quintal gold had made public the audio of Gyawali demanding two crore rupees to remove his name from the case. An order has also been given to investigate his property.
Gyawali is the same officer whom former Home Minister Ravi Lamichhane appointed as the head of CIB and arrested Nepali Congress leader and former Home Minister Balkrishna Khand, former Home Minister and UML leader Ram Bahadur Thapa Badal's son Pratik Thapa, former Home Minister and UML leader Top Bahadur Raimanjhi, former Speaker and Home Minister and Maoist leader Krishna Bahadur Mahara in the Bhutanese refugee case. After this, Gyawali had also made preparations to arrest Nepali Congress leader and currently Foreign Minister Dr. Arju Rana Deuba.
