USA Heatwaves Impact: Several record-breaking heatwaves will continue across the US, with temperatures reaching dangerous levels in the West, while the East will continue to experience extreme heat throughout the week. The National Weather Service issued an excessive heat warning for about 3.9 million people, with temperatures expected to reach 37.7 degrees Celsius in Oregon and 46 degrees in parts of northern California.
One motorcyclist was killed and another hospitalized on Sunday as temperatures soared to 53.3 degrees at Death Valley National Park in eastern California. The deceased was one of a group of six motorcyclists in the Badwater Basin area. Another motorcyclist in Las Vegas was hospitalized after suffering from heatstroke. Due to excessive heat warnings, visitors chose to head to relatively cooler areas such as Mount Charleston, as well as water parks.
The National Weather Service also issued excessive heat warnings for other areas, including the area around Lake Tahoe. According to the agency, there is no possibility of relief from the scorching heat in the near future. Temperatures were expected to exceed 37.8 degrees in western Nevada and northeastern California.
Many US cities are expected to break high temperature records from previous years. Las Vegas broke the 2007 high temperature record of 46 degrees, while Phoenix's 45.5 degrees came close to the 1942 high of 46.7 degrees. Temperatures are also expected to reach record highs in California, Oregon and San Francisco. Heat-related deaths in Arizona's Maricopa County have raised concerns. At least 13 people have died from the scorching heat, while 160 possible fatalities are under investigation. The alarming numbers include the death of a 10-year-old boy in Phoenix from extreme heat while hiking.
