Kiev, July 20 (HS). Former Ukrainian MP Iryna Ferian (60) was shot dead by an unknown assailant. Iryna is known for her campaign to promote the Ukrainian language.

Iryna Ferian, a former parliamentarian who was seriously injured in an attack in the western city of Lviv on Friday, died in hospital. Ukrainian authorities said the search for the attacker was ongoing. The attacker fled the scene. They said the case was being investigated.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on his official Telegram channel on Saturday that “all available surveillance cameras are being examined, witnesses are being questioned and several districts are being surveyed.”

Ferion was a member of the Ukrainian parliament between 2012 and 2014 and was best known for her campaigns to promote the use of the Ukrainian language by Russian-speaking Ukrainian officials.

At least two people were killed and three others injured in Russian missile attacks on infrastructure in Ukraine's northeastern Kharkiv region, governor Oleh Sienhiubov said on Saturday. Ukrainian authorities have confirmed that the death toll following a Russian attack on the city of Mykolaiv on Friday has risen to four. The city's mayor Alexander Sienkiewicz said a child was among the dead.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky wrote about the Mykolaiv attack on social media, saying a missile hit a sports field near the apartment block.

He said, “Russia proves every day with its terror that 'pressure' is not enough. This destruction of life must be stopped. We need new solutions for our security. Russia must realize the power of the world.” Ukraine's air force said on Saturday that Russia carried out four missile and 17 drone attacks overnight, of which 13 drones were shot down.
