England cricket has suffered a major setback today. Former England cricketer Graham Thorpe has passed away at the age of 55. The England and Wales Cricket Board officially informed about this on Monday (August 5). Thorpe, who made his debut in 1993, was considered one of the best batsmen in the history of English cricket. His departure is a big loss for English cricket.
Graham Thorpe captained England on three occasions and held various coaching roles for his country between 2010 and 2022. Thorpe scored 6744 runs in 179 innings of 100 Test matches for England at an average of 44.66, with his best score being 200 not out. He has scored 16 centuries and 39 half-centuries in this format. Apart from this, he scored 2380 runs in 77 innings of 82 matches in ODIs at an average of 37.18. During this he scored 21 half-centuries.
Graham Thorpe also played cricket with legends like Sachin-Sehwag. He scored 283 runs in 5 Test matches against Team India at an average of more than 35. In ODIs against Team India, this player scored 328 runs at an average of more than 36. This player's average against Team India was definitely good but he could never score a century.
Graham Thorpe was very popular not only as a player but also as a coach. This player coached New South Wales in 2005 and then he was appointed the coach of England Lions. His job was to prepare young players. In early 2013, Thorpe became the batting coach of England's ODI and T20 teams. He became the interim coach of the team during the T20 series against Pakistan in 2020.
