Food enough to feed 150 million people is wasted around the world

If food is not wasted, not only can millions of people be fed, but emissions will also be reduced by 4 percent. This information has been jointly released by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). The report warns that if grain production from the farm is brought to the end of consumption in 2033, then the calories obtained by the citizens of poor countries from food may double.

Agricultural land use causes one-fifth of greenhouse gas emissions globally. According to the report, fruits and vegetables accounted for the highest share of food wasted from 2021 to 2023. Fruits and vegetables have a short shelf life. One-fourth of food waste is from grains. In India too, spoilage of fruits and vegetables in homes is common.

Millions of people in the world are victims of hunger. The malnourished poor suffer because they are unable to get two meals a day. The United Nations Agriculture Organization estimates that by 2030, about 600 million people will be forced to face hunger. To reduce food waste by 50 percent by 2030, 10 percent more food will have to be made available to the common people of poor countries.
