Domestic airline companies in India will now have to share real-time weather information during take-off and landing. This data will be given directly to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD). The aim of this initiative is to make weather forecasting more accurate.
Will benefit from real-time data
Currently, the Meteorological Department collects information like temperature, humidity, and wind speed through weather balloons from 50-60 places across the country. However, this data is a few hours old. Now, with real-time data, the weather department will get immediate and detailed information, which will improve forecasting.
6000 flights will be made every day Data Source
There are around 6000 domestic flights in the country every day. Real-time weather data from various locations will be shared through these flights. With this, the Meteorological Department will have comprehensive and accurate data of different places, which will strengthen the weather forecast.
Collaboration with the Ministry of Aviation and Geology
Geology Ministry Secretary M. Ravichandran said that talks are going on with the Aviation Ministry to implement this project. It is expected that this scheme will be implemented by the end of this year.
New direction of accurate forecasting
Ravichandran said that the more the weather forecast is based on real-time data, the more accurate it will be. With the country’s growing airport network and increasing flights, data from different places will make the weather department’s forecast more detailed and accurate.
Better planning at national level
This scheme will not only help in maintaining better aircraft operations but will also improve the forecasting of natural disasters and climate changes. Ravichandran described it as like an “exit poll”, where more data ensures accurate results.
This step can prove to be an important milestone for the meteorology and aviation sector in India.
