New Delhi, Neslash (Greece): On one hand, Indra, a country with great culture in the world, is taking care of the black people, on the other hand, Sun God is showering his blessings on Yunnan (Greece), a country with great culture. Rainfall has not been seen there for the last few weeks. Lakes are drying up, rivers are becoming dull. Standing crops are drying up. Water bombs are raining water to keep them alive. Groundwater is also drying up. Olive trees, the symbol of Yunnan, are also drying up. The situation has become very serious in northern Yunnan.
Dimitrios Papadakis, who owns an olive grove in northern Yunnan, comes to his olive grove every morning with his single son. He brings water from the surrounding area into his water truck and pours it into the paddy fields, doing his best to keep the crop alive.
Yet he sighs and says that now even the boring has started drying up. This Papadakis is also the president of the agricultural cooperative of Halkidiki village. Actually there are three small capes in this area. This is a favorite place for tourists.
Southern Europe has been facing drought-like conditions for the past three years. Lakes there are drying up due to water withdrawal. Even wild horses are dying.
Papadakis' nearly 270 olive trees are drying up. The water coming out of the ground is also becoming salty. There is a fear of the crop being cut in half.
On the other hand, as the number of visitors is increasing, water shortage is also increasing.
Kassandra, on the western edge of Greece, has a population of 17,000 and swells to 650,000 in summer. So there is a huge shortage of water. Mayor Anesta Sia Halkipi said that due to the lack of rain this winter (the southern Mediterranean region receives rain in winter, not summer like India) water supplies have decreased by about 30 to 40 percent.
The EU Emergency Management Service says drought conditions prevail not only in Greece but also across the entire Black Sea coastal area, spreading westwards and affecting Greece as well.
