New York, July 30 (HS). After US Vice President Kamala Harris became the official candidate of the Democratic Party for the presidential election, Republican presidential candidate and former President Donald Trump seems to be backing out from his earlier commitment to debate with his rival Harris. Trump has questioned the importance of this possible debate and said that he will “probably” debate, but he can also “argue not to do so”. Harris's team retorted to Trump's statement and said that he is “scared”. In an interview aired on Fox News Channel on Monday night, Trump was answering more softly than before after being asked several times about debating with Harris.
Republican candidate Trump was set to debate with then-Democratic candidate Joe Biden. But after Biden dropped out of the race and Harris was named the Democratic Party's nominee, Trump has questioned the terms of the original debate with Biden that he had agreed to.
Trump has suggested that the proposed September 10 debate on ABC News be held on another network. He has called ABC “fake news.” In a phone conversation with reporters last week, Trump was asked if he would debate Harris at least once. He replied, “Yeah, absolutely. I would love to do that,” Trump said that debating is an obligation.
“I would love to debate. But I can also say this. Everybody knows who I am. And now people know who she is,” Trump said when asked repeatedly by host Laura Ingraham about the debate in an interview on Monday.
The former president eventually said, “The answer is yes, I would probably debate.” He went on for a minute to argue that any debate should be held before early voting begins in states and then he added, “The answer is yes, but I could also make an argument not to do it.”
